What does this process do for the individuals telling the story?
The process of telling one's life story is a beautiful stroll down memory lane. This process is incredibly therapeutic and enjoyable for every individual, even those who are shy or initially unwilling to open up. I have been helping people to preserve their stories for six years, and this is by far my favorite aspect of the endeavor. I am blessed to listen to life stories unfold, and watch as storytellers re-live the experiences of their lives. It is an overwhelmingly enriching, emotional, and meaningful experience that absolutely everyone I have interviewed has enjoyed.
What if my parents are unwilling to tell their stories?
Many of those who are asked to tell their stories are reluctant to do so. Perhaps they don't want to delve into the past, maybe they feel like no one cares about their story, or they haven't done anything important enough to document. I can't tell you how many times I've met with people who assure me they have no interest in telling their story, and they have no idea why their children are putting them up to this. An hour into the interview, they are talking non-stop and I can't get a question in edgewise! Sometimes it's those who protest the most who end up getting the most out of it, and who's stories are truly remarkable. All we have to do is begin talking and the flood gates open!
There is no time like the present to save these stories. Memories, pictures, documents and people disappear over time. Don't let your legacy be forgotten.
